Background of the study
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have emerged as vital agents in addressing socio-economic challenges, particularly poverty alleviation. In Ado-Ekiti, NGOs play a significant role by implementing programs that focus on education, healthcare, and income-generating activities to uplift disadvantaged communities. These organizations often fill the gap left by limited government resources, providing targeted support that fosters community empowerment and sustainable development (Ogunleye, 2023). NGOs in the region engage in capacity building, skill development, and microfinance initiatives that help beneficiaries break the cycle of poverty. Their efforts have contributed to increased literacy rates, improved health outcomes, and enhanced economic opportunities for marginalized groups. Furthermore, NGOs often collaborate with local stakeholders to tailor their interventions to the unique needs of the community, thereby maximizing impact (Ajibola, 2024). Despite their contributions, challenges such as funding constraints, limited outreach, and bureaucratic hurdles occasionally undermine the effectiveness of NGO programs (Folorunsho, 2025). This study critically evaluates the role of NGOs in poverty alleviation in Ado-Ekiti, aiming to identify best practices and areas for improvement to bolster their contribution to sustainable development.
Statement of the problem
In Ado-Ekiti, poverty remains a significant challenge despite the active involvement of non-governmental organizations. Although NGOs implement various poverty alleviation programs, their overall impact is often constrained by issues such as insufficient funding, limited geographical coverage, and bureaucratic inefficiencies (Ogunleye, 2023). Many vulnerable groups continue to face socio-economic hardships, suggesting that the interventions, while beneficial, have not fully addressed the systemic issues underlying poverty. The disconnect between program objectives and actual outcomes is exacerbated by the lack of a coordinated strategy among different NGOs, leading to duplication of efforts and suboptimal resource utilization (Ajibola, 2024). Consequently, the persistent prevalence of poverty in the region indicates the need for a critical evaluation of NGO activities. This study seeks to examine the challenges faced by NGOs in their poverty alleviation efforts and to propose recommendations that can enhance their effectiveness and ensure a more sustainable impact on the local community (Folorunsho, 2025).
